Joseph “Crazy Joe” Gallo (April 7, 1929–April 7, 1972) was a Brooklyn mobster best remembered for rebelling against his own crime family, becoming an unlikely celebrity, and being murdered while celebrating his 43rd birthday. He belonged to the Profaci organization, which later became the Colombo crime family. His beginnings in Brooklyn Gallo grew up in Brooklyn and formed a crew with his brothers Larry and Albert Gallo. Working within Joe Profaci’s organization, they built a reputation for violence and intimidation. His “Crazy Joe” nickname reflected his frightening, unpredictable public image.
