A link between the older Frank Yale organization of Brooklyn and the Giuseppe Profaci Crime Family, Frank Abbatemarco was one of several members of the Abbatemarco-Magnasco clan to be gunned down in mob hits.

Frank Abbatemarco was born in Brooklyn on July 4, 1899, fourth son of Anthony and Rose Abbatemarco and younger brother of Prohibition Era-racketeer Michael "Mike Schatz" Abbatemarco. Abbatemarco's parents left the Salerno province of Italy in the mid-1880s and settled in the Gowanus section of Brooklyn. They lived and raised their family in the Italian neighborhoods of Carroll Street, President Street and Union Street. They formed a close relationship with their neighbors, the Cardello family. (Four Cardellos also became members of the Profaci-Colombo Crime Family.) Frank “Frankie Shots” Abbatemarco’s murder was a major trigger of the Gallo rebellion against Joseph Profaci. But Abbatemarco did not live to fight in the open war: he was killed in November 1959, before the kidnappings and sustained violence of 1961–1963. His gambling business, his relationship with the Gallos, and the struggle over his earnings helped bring the conflict about. en.wikipedia.org Why the Gallos turned against Profaci Joseph Profaci headed the organization later known as the Colombo crime family. The Gallo brothers—Larry, Joey “Crazy Joe,” and Albert “Kid Blast” Gallo—belonged to its South Brooklyn faction. Their rebellion grew out of resentment over Profaci’s demands for tribute, his distribution of profitable rackets, and the advantages enjoyed by people close to him. Larry was a central organizer; Joey became the rebellion’s best-known public figure. resourcespacec2.svsu.edu Abbatemarco was an established Brooklyn numbers operator connected to this same circle. Their business ties predated the war: in 1952, Frank, his son Anthony, Larry and Joey Gallo, and young Carmine Persico were among those arrested in a gambling investigation. These men had worked within an overlapping network before becoming divided by murder and shifting loyalties. American Mafia Abbatemarco’s dispute—and his murder Historical accounts generally describe Abbatemarco falling behind on, or deliberately withholding, payments to Profaci. Some say the Gallos encouraged his resistance. Profaci regarded the withholding of money as a challenge to his authority, and Abbatemarco was murdered on November 4, 1959, at Cardello’s Tavern on Fourth Avenue in Park Slope. en.wikipedia.org Who carried out the murder remains disputed. The familiar account says Profaci assigned the killing to the Gallo faction, promising it a share of Abbatemarco’s numbers operation. That version identifies Gallo associate Joseph “Joe Jelly” Gioielli as a gunman. Other accounts say the Gallos did not carry out the assignment. Research drawing on FBI reports identifies Joseph Colombo as a suspected shooter named by informants. Those competing allegations should not be presented as a settled identification of the killers.
